Day 1

 

Gatlinburg, TN

Arrive by plane to Knoxville, TN (TYS) and be transferred to your hotel, 2 blocks from downtown Gatlinburg overlooking a creek, for a 4 night stay. D

 

 

 

 

 

 

Day 2

 

Smoky Mountain National Park

This morning at the Welcome Meeting, meet your fellow travelers and guides with a briefing of your day to day activities. Followed by an introductory tour of the Great Smoky Mountain National Park were we make our way to an amazing view from the top of the Mountains at Clingman's Dome at an elevation of 6,643 feet. Enjoy lunch and have a free and relaxing afternoon enjoying the hotel or walk the main street of Gatlinburg, full of shops and attractions. B, L, D.

Day 3

 

 

Hiking in the Smokies

Come face to face with the splendor of the Smoky Mountains as you hike amidst forests of pine, hemlock and rhododendrons, along rivers and streams. There will be 2 groups with a medium level hike and a high level hike guided by nature specialist explaining the history of the mountains, the people who called them home, and the vegetation and wildlife found within. Lunch picnic in the park. In the afternoon we will explore Arrowmont School of Arts & Craft founded in 1917, where master craftsmen reside and teach age old crafts. B, L, D

Day 4

 

Arts & Craft Community

Explore the many talented artisans who call the Smoky Mountains their home. Meet craftsmen who have been following their family traditions from the early Mountain pioneer to the 21st Century. Lunch will be in a local restaurant in the middle of the Arts & Crafts Community. The afternoon is free for you to continue exploring the many facets of the craft community. Tonight we have the special treat of attending an award winning production at the Dixie Stampede. B, L, D

Cherokee, NC

The Cherokee Indians were the first to be charmed by the natural beauty of the mountains and they called them “Land of the Blue Smoke”, or Smoky Mountains as we know them today.  The Cherokees in Western North Carolina today are the descendants from those Cherokees who were able to hold on to land they owned, or hid out in the hills, or were able to return.  Today, the Eastern Band of the Cherokee Indians is a sovereign nation of 100 square miles, with more than 13,000 enrolled members — a place where modern people respect and preserve the history of their people. Day 6

 

Cataloochee Valley

Cataloochee Valley is nestled among some of the most rugged mountains in the southeastern United States. In 2001, elk were released in Cataloochee Valley. The herd can be seen regularly in the fields of the valley, especially in the early morning and evening hours. Other wildlife commonly spotted include, bear, deer, and turkeys.

Cherokee Village and Museum

Through knowledgeable hosts, special group programs and award-winning permanent exhibits Museum of the Cherokee Indian offers 10,000 years of artifacts and history that will spark the imagination and inspire the soul.

The village tour transports visitors to the mid-1750s and along the winding trails numerous shelters reveal Cherokee people expertly demonstrating their chosen craft. B, L, D

  

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

Day 8

 

Rafting in the Nantahala (River of the Noonday Sun)

The Southeast's most popular river, is an exciting half-day introduction to whitewater for families, youth groups, first-time rafters and experienced rafters wishing to captain their own raft or adventure duck (inflatable kayak). B, L, D

Day 9

 

Cades Cove

We will spend the day exploring Cades Cove which was once known as "Kate's Cove" after an Indian chief's wife. Cades Cove is today the largest open air museum in the entire Great Smoky Mountain National Park and has original pioneer homesteads, barns, businesses, pasture and farmland--a fitting tribute to the hearty people who lived here in the days of yesteryear. We will have opportunities to view wild animals thru out the day and specially near sunset.

Gatlinburg
